Fast Retailing’s Uniqlo chain is continuing its global rollout and on Friday it opened its first ever store in the burgeoning Vietnamese market.

The company said the shop, at 35-45 Le Thanh Ton Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, is “a new milestone” for it in what it believes “will be one of its most important markets anywhere in the world”.

Founder, chairman, president and CEO of the group, Tadashi Yanai, added: "The opening of our first store in Vietnam represents a truly important step in the global development and expansion of our company.”

While it may be a surprise that the company hasn’t entered the Vietnamese market before now, Fast Retailing has taken a very slow and steady approach to its international expansion that sees it being much more cautious than some of its sector peers.

The retailer’s Vietnam director general and COO Osamu Ikezoe said it’s aiming to make its business “reflect the culture and needs of Vietnamese people, and to make a long-term positive contribution to society here”.
