Shoe designer becomes youngest UK COVID-19 victim

As the death rate from COVID-19 rises, the individual human stories can get lost, but one came through clearly on Tuesday as the UK’s youngest victim was named.

Craig Ruston's blog had detailed his brave fight again MND. - Facebook/Me and my MND

Craig Ruston was only 45 and came from Kettering, Northamptonshire, the heart of the UK’s shoemaking industry. He was a footwear designer who had worked for Dr Martens, Hunter Boots and Fred Perry.

Father-of-two Ruston had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2018 and since then had run a blog on Facebook called Me and my MND that had detailed his experiences with the illness and his fight against it.

His wife Sally updated the blog on Tuesday explaining that he had been taken ill last week and said: “My Amazing Craig passed away yesterday morning at 6.20am. We are truly heartbroken. How dare that take Craig who was already facing this (MND), the most vile and evil of diseases”.

She also said that "at diagnosis in June 2018 he was given roughly two years to live. He was pushing that back. Craig was not ready to go. Still doing everything in his power to raise awareness and fight the fight for MND”.

Her post illustrated the human story behind the news we keep hearing that those who’ve died have all had “underlying health conditions” and just how much of an impact the coronavirus is having (and will have) on families worldwide.
