Italian trade show Milano Unica, a benchmark event for the textile industry, has announced its new trend research for Spring/Summer 2018, curated by Creative Director Stefano Fadda.

The main research themes are travelling and the encounter with different civilisations, as well as the connection between the past and the present, with reference to major historical figures in the arts and culture. The research produced three main themes: 'Nefertiti in Ibiza', 'Kazimir Malevich in Sorrento' and 'Carlo Mollino in Tehran'. Imagine the legendary queen of Egypt strolling around the streets of Ibiza, or the Russian artist travelling to the south of Italy and the mellow Campania landscape, or Turin architect Mollino journeying to Iran, in search of Persian cultural traces.

"The combinations are daring (...) but not empty of meaning. We are convinced that modernity isn't an abstract concept, it is rather the by-product of an unusual, even extreme combination of languages, experiences, cultures and historical figures from the four corners of the world and all historical periods. We are equally convinced that linguistic and visual cross-pollination alone will enable us to view traditional manufacturing in a new light," stated Stefano Fadda.

The 'Nefertiti in Ibiza' theme features floral decorations, rare Egyptian craftsmanship, gold jewellery, kaftans and traditional Ibiza furniture. In the 'Kazimir Malevich in Sorrento' theme, the works of the Russian suprematist artist blend with Sorrento maiolica pottery designs. The 'Carlo Mollino in Tehran' theme focuses on the osmosis between East and West, between the glamour of Persian society and the meticulous sophistication of Savoy Turin.

"This edition of [Milano Unica] Trends is part and parcel of our trade show's innovative evolution," stated Ercole Botto Poala, President of Milano Unica. "The presentation of the Spring/Summer 2018 trends (...) is also meant to encourage our companies to move forward, acting together as a team, in order to benefit from the new opportunities arising from the complex global situation," he added.

Milano Unica is Italy's leading trade fair for apparel textiles and accessories. The next edition will take place on Feb. 1, 2017 in Milan.
