There is a new man at the helm of Gerard Darel in the USA. The Parisian high-end womenswear label, bought back and relaunched at the end of 2015 by the Gerbi family - which founded it in 1971 - after four years under the aegis of the Advent investment fund, has appointed John Moyers as general manager of its US subsidiary.

Fall/Winter 2019-20 campaign - Gerard Darel

Before starting in the new post in January 2020, John Moyers worked for four years on the US market for another French label, Zadig & Voltaire, as vice-president retail. Moyers, formerly also with Marc Jacobs, J.Crew and Gap, is based in New York, and has replaced Dinah Emsalem, who had been in charge of Darel’s US subsidiary for just over a year.

Gerard Darel experienced difficulties a few years ago, including having to file for receivership, before it was bought back by the Gerbi family. In 2017, it established a foothold again in the USA, a market where it was successful in the past, and with which it still had strong, long-standing links. In the USA, the label is active on the wholesale market and notably operates 23 retail corners in branches of the Bloomingdale's department store chain, as well as two directly owned stores, in Los Angeles and New York.

By hiring a retail specialist like Moyers, the two men in charge of Gerard Darel, Laurent Gerbi and Thierry Maruani, are clearly intending to expand the label's US store network, something which Moyers has been able to do for Zadig & Voltaire in the last few years.

Gerard Darel is present in approximately 25 countries, and also has a second brand, Pablo, which is chiefly active in France. Following Gerard Darel’s new acquisition four years ago, the USA remain the top priority in its international strategy, though France is still its leading market, with over 170 direct retail outlets, between stores and concessions. The label has as many stores altogether in all the other countries where it operates.
