After announcing the departure of Xavier Romatet last week, Jonathan Newhouse, the President and CEO of Condé Nast International, unveiled the name of the new head of Condé Nast France. The publishing group (Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Glamour) has chosen to entrust its subsidiary to the man who developped Elle in Asia.

Yves Bougon has been at the head of Hachette Fujingaho, after joining in 2004, staying on after the business was acquired by the Hearst Magazine Group in 2011. In 2014, he was appointed as senior vice-president of the group and was responsible for all brands in Southeast Asia.

“Yves Bougon has since been occupied with setting up a central digital organisation and developing a highly profitable e-commerce business around Elle Japan,” Condé Nast said. “A total of five magazines and digital media products were launched under Bougon’s supervision which increased the digital business’s percent of sales from two percent in 2006 to 40 percent at present.”

The graduate of Sciences Po and Dauphine, who lived in Japan since 1990 and finished his studies there, will now be a key player in French media. “Yves has deep experience and a track record of success in directing the evolution of a business from print to a modern, digital and multi-platform organization,” said Newhouse in a statement on March 22. “He has that rare profile of understanding the luxury market, the companies in that space and their culture as well as an innate understanding of some of the industry’s most important growth markets and how to tap into them.”

At the heart of Hearst Fujingaho, Yves Bougon was able to develop a business model that balanced print and digital and developed an additional and significant source of income with Elle events. Back in France, Bougon will report to Newhouse from May 7 when he officially takes office.
