San Francisco-based eco-friendly footwear company Allbirds opened its first New York flagship on Tuesday, a 4,800-square-foot store featuring an all new retail strategy ready to be rolled out in a flurry of new locations slated to open over the next year.

Allbirds teamed up with design studio Partners & Spade to come up with the new retail concept for the flagship, located on SoHo’s Spring Street. The strategy aims to channel the philosophy behind the company’s shoes and was described in a press release from the brand as “intentionally un-designed, using natural materials, and comfortable.”

At its core, the concept aims to provide customers with an improved try-on experience, which feels “organic (in every sense of the word).”

The new strategy is also intended to be highly scalable and has already been incorporated into Allbirds’ updated SF flagship, located on Hotaling Alley, which also reopened on Tuesday.

This emphasis on scalability is very much intentional, as the brand, which was founded as an online business in 2016, has announced ambitious expansion plans for the coming months. Along with Chicago and Boston, where Allbirds has already signed leases on spaces, the brand has revealed projects to open locations in Los Angeles and Washington DC, with a further eight stores slated to launch in the US over the course of next year. The company has also indicated that it has plans to open two international locations.

Allbirds’ new NYC flagship is now open at 73 Spring Street, New York.
